Learning Specialist

Under the leadership and direct supervision of the Associate Director of Academic Initiatives, the RRC Learning Specialist will be able to assist in facilitating high-impact learning components of the Raza Research and Conference Program. Specifically, they will coach student academic projects, aiding historically underrepresented students' retention, academic success, and post-baccalaureate mindset.

General Responsibilities for Learning Specialists

  • Attend Raza RC summer, winter, and spring retreats and trainings, when applicable
  • Attend and, at times, assist with weekly all-staff meetings
  • Attend one or two one-on-one meetings per quarter with the Director
  • Attend one-on-one meetings per quarter with the supervisor, depending on the needs of the learning specialist
  • Represent the Centro and all other Community Centers at tabling events during the academic year
  • Submit feedback and recommendations for future development of the Centro

Position Responsibilities 

  • High-touch coaching of Raza Research and Conference Program Scholars.
  • Weekly office hours, individual and group meetings with scholars.
  • Coach scholars throughout their research projects/presentations, scholarships, internships, and graduate school applications.
  • Facilitate student learning around interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary methods.
  • Facilitate weekly community writing collectives.
  • Facilitate targeted writing collectives for scholar participation in national conferences.
  • Track scholar research and internship/scholarship process and outcomes.
  • Guide students to available resources for personal, emotional, physical, academic, financial, and general wellness.
  • Report and navigate scholar concerns to and in conjunction with RRC staff.
  • Serve as a research assistant to the RRC director and associate director of  academic initiatives
  • Whenever possible, participate in weekly staff meetings and RRC signature events.

Qualifications for Learning Specialist

  • Current full-time UC San Diego undergraduate student.  Must be enrolled full-time as part of their employment.
  • Experience in applying for and participating in undergraduate research programs
  • Ability to be in the community and build community with RRC scholars and career staff
  • Ability to connect RRC scholars to resources
  • Experience in mentoring underrepresented students in research design and completion
  • Interest in high-impact learning programming and developing post-baccalaureate mindsets
  • Ability to present at national conferences alongside Raza Research and Conference Scholars
  • Commitment to improving personal pedagogical, counseling, and mentoring practices 
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to manage complex situations that may be of a confidential and sensitive nature
  • Ability to understand and articulate issues of race, class, gender, educational equity, and cross-cultural communication
  • The breadth of knowledge concerning Latinx/Chicanx art, culture, performance, and history
  • Ability to work within the Raza RC Mission and Strategic Plan
  • Ability to work with a diverse and broad population, including students, graduate assistants, faculty, and administrators
  • Proven experience working collectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work with faculty, students, staff, and community members
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing and PCs

Learning Specialist Finalists must be available for the following dates:  

  • Mandatory Spring Quarter 24 Course: March 2024- June 2024
  • AY: Weekly Staff Meeting: (dates to be announced Spring 2024)
  • Summer Training: September 2024 
  • RRC Student Staff Retreat: September 2024 (dates to be announced Spring 2024)
  • Latinx Family Orientation Weekend (dates to be announced Spring 2024)
  • End of the Year Celebration: Wednesdays, June 5, 2024: 3 pm-4:30 pm

The dates mentioned above are nonnegotiable and are a condition of hiring. Students in these positions must prioritize their responsibilities surrounding the internship program above all other work commitments. 

Additional Information

  • Learning Specialist wage: $18.60 Per Hour (maximum of 10 hours a week)
  • DACA and AB450  students are highly encouraged to apply to the PACE  Fellowship Program for opportunities at the Raza Resource Centro
  • Work-study students are highly encouraged to apply
